The Sebastian Travel Packing Method: Because We All Just Want to Get There with Our Stuff

Packing for a trip—especially with kids—doesn’t have to be chaotic! With The Sebastian Travel Packing Method, I break down a stress-free, step-by-step packing process that starts weeks in advance. From kid-friendly entertainment hacks to a foolproof medical kit, this guide ensures everything is packed and ready without the last-minute scramble. Plus, my bed layout system makes it easy to see every item for each family member at a glance. Whether you’re prepping for a ski trip or a beach getaway, these tips will keep you organized, efficient, and stress-free before takeoff!

Let’s be real, packing for a trip – especially with kids – can feel like a logistical puzzle you didn’t sign up for. But here’s the good news: I’ve got a system that turns the pre-trip chaos into something…well, almost manageable. Welcome to the Sebastian Travel Packing Method, where we prioritize getting organized so we can leave feeling relaxed, not stressed and enjoy vacation.

The 4-6 Week Head Start: Giving Ourselves a Break

We’re all about starting early here. No last-minute scrambles, just a relaxed approach to getting ready. Why? Because life’s too short to stress about socks.

The Size Reality Check

Kids grow at warp speed. That’s why we do the "Size Reality Check" weeks in advance. Swimsuits, ski layers (even though we rent the gear), everything gets a good look. We’re all about avoiding the "my clothes don’t fit" drama on day one. Planning a ski trip with the family should be about creating joyful memories on the slopes, not worrying about whether the gear fits.

The Online Rescue Mission

Discovering a wardrobe issue weeks before departure? That’s just a reason to shop online. No stress, just a quick order.

The Mental Checklist: Brainstorming Done Easy

Starting early lets my brain casually think about what we need. It’s like a laid-back to-do list.

The Gradual Pack: One Step at a Time

We pack a little bit each day, sometimes as I’m folding clean laundry. No frantic stuffing, just a calm and steady approach.

The Guest Room Headquarters: Where Packing Happens

My guest room turns into the packing HQ. It’s where the magic (or at least the organization) happens.

  • The Dresser Stash: The Secret Weapon – I start hiding items in the dresser, like a squirrel getting ready for winter. Out-of-season clothes, extra toiletries, and any small travel-friendly entertainment items I pick up while out shopping. This way, I’m not scrambling at the last minute to keep my kid entertained.

  • The Bed Zones: Everyone Gets a Spot – Each family member gets their own dedicated row from the head to the foot of the bed. This layout allows me to visually confirm that every essential item is packed, ensuring nothing gets forgotten. Pajamas, underwear, socks, outfits, layers—everything is lined up in order, from top to bottom. This method also helps me identify any missing items at a glance, making last-minute adjustments easier. By organizing this way, I can quickly see if someone is missing a jacket, enough pairs of socks, or an extra layer before anything gets packed into the suitcase.

  • The Visual Inventory: Seeing Is Believing – I lay out items on the bed, so we can see what we’ve got. It’s like a packing preview.

The Kid-Friendly Arsenal: Keeping Everyone Happy

Traveling with kids means having a good stash of fun stuff.

  • The Gift Trick: Stockpile Fun Items Over Time – When I’m out shopping for birthday presents, I keep an eye out for small travel-friendly toys, books, or activities. If I find something great, I grab an extra one to stash away for future trips. This way, I always have a collection of new and exciting entertainment options ready to go, without the last-minute rush.

  • Usborne Magic Painting Pads & Ooly Art Supplies – Mess-free creativity is a must.

  • LEGOs, Magna-Tiles, and Balls – Classic fun that works every time.

  • Usborne Sticker Books – Great for keeping kids engaged during meals.

  • Small cans of Play-Doh – Perfect for sensory activities on the go.

  • LEGOs with paper plates and plastic bags – Easy to transport and great for restaurants.

  • Activity Books & New Books for Reading – Keeping kids entertained and engaged during travel.

  • Goggles and Pool Toys – Because every trip needs some fun in the water.

The Sebastian Packing Plan: A Simple Guide

4-6 Weeks Out:

  • Size checks, online shopping, mental checklists.

2 Weeks Out:

  • Clothing, shoes, toiletries, electronics.

One Week Out:

  • Bed layout: Everyone gets a row from head to toe to ensure all items are accounted for.

  • Entertainment

  • Suitcase prep: Suitcases are packed efficiently with packing cubes and essential layering—one per person for cold-weather destinations.

A Few Days Before Packing Up:

  • Everything starts making its way into suitcases—one for each person if we're headed to a cold-weather destination.

  • Ensure suitcases are packed efficiently with packing cubes and essential layering.

The Day Before Travel:

  • Pack a carry-on with a change of clothes, pajamas for everyone, a swimsuit in case luggage gets lost, my medical kit, and chargers separated in pouches for each person.

  • Ensure all devices, headphones, and essential electronics are packed and charged.

  • Don’t forget your AirTags!

  • Final checks, deep breaths, and plenty of snacks.

The Medical Kit: Just In Case

I asked my doctor for a prescription for antibiotics to take with me after getting stuck with strep throat for my son a few times while traveling. Having it on hand gives peace of mind and avoids the hassle of finding a doctor or pharmacy in an unfamiliar place.

We’re ready for anything from scrapes to sniffles.

  • Pain and Fever: Tylenol, Motrin, Kids’ versions.

  • Allergies: Benadryl, Kids’ Benadryl, Flonase.

  • First Aid: Band-Aids, gauze, wipes, tweezers, etc.

  • Hydration/Digestion: Electrolytes, eye drops, Simethicone, Miralax.

  • Respiratory: Afrin, Sudafed, Tessalon Perles.

  • Comfort/Protection: Lip balm, repellent, sanitizer, masks, Melatonin.

  • Personal/Prescription: Emergency meds, tampons and pads, Zofran, steroid cream, anxiety meds.

Sebastian’s Packing Tips: The Practical Guide to Travel Success

  • Use Packing Cubes: These organizational tools help compress clothing and keep suitcases tidy.

  • Roll Your Clothes: Rolling clothes saves space and minimizes wrinkles.

  • Create a Packing List: A detailed packing list is essential for staying organized.

  • Involve Your Children: Let your children help with packing their own belongings. This teaches them responsibility and helps them feel involved in the trip.

  • Don’t Overpack (and Embrace Your Favorites): Don’t overpack. I don’t know about anyone else, but I tend to end up wearing the same favorite things over and over on vacation anyway. Especially when it comes down to a favorite pair of jeans or a comfy loungewear set that I wear down to breakfast. Focus on packing versatile pieces that you love and know you’ll wear.

  • Plan for Mid-Trip Laundry: I always plan on sending some laundry halfway through, especially for base layers that get sweaty and ski socks. That way, I only have to pack 3-4 sets for each of us. This significantly reduces the amount of clothing you need to pack.

  • Plane Outfit Laundry Strategy: I always make sure everything I wear on the plane is fully washable, and I send that to get washed at our destination. Then, I wear it home. It’s a great way to start with fresh clothes on the return journey.

  • Destination-Specific Fabrics: I save my wool and cashmere for our destination—not because they might get damaged, but because I don’t want them getting germy and dirty during travel. I’d rather have my cozy sweaters fresh and clean when I arrive.

  • Remember the Essentials: Don’t forget goggles and pool toys! These are easy to overlook but essential for a fun and comfortable vacation.

  • Test Worn-In Items: If you’re packing items that have been stored or worn in, test them out before your trip. Check ski jackets and pants for tears or damage. For swimsuits, try them on and move around to ensure they fit properly and comfortably. This will prevent unpleasant surprises on vacation.

  • Label Everything: Label suitcases and carry-ons with your contact information.

  • Take Pictures of your Luggage Inside and Out: This can be helpful if your luggage is lost. I don’t always do this, but it is good practice.

  • Embrace the Imperfections: No packing process is perfect. Be prepared for minor hiccups and focus on enjoying the journey. Unless you’re going to the wilderness (which clearly I am not), anything you forget, you can usually buy at your destination.

There you have it – the Sebastian Travel Packing Method. It’s about being organized, being practical, and having a good time. Happy travels!

Summer in the Alps: Where to Go for the Ultimate Mountain Escape

The Alps in summer are a revelation—a world of sun-drenched meadows, crystalline lakes, and breathtaking mountain vistas, where the air is crisp, and the luxury is effortless. Far from the winter ski crowds, Europe’s most iconic alpine destinations transform into havens of adventure, wellness, and gourmet indulgence. Picture yourself hiking through wildflower-strewn trails, dining on a terrace with panoramic views of the Matterhorn, or unwinding in a world-class spa overlooking a glacial valley. From the chic charm of St. Moritz to the untamed beauty of Chamonix, this is the ultimate guide to experiencing the Alps at their most radiant—where fine dining, outdoor exploration, and high-altitude rejuvenation come together in perfect harmony.

Beyond the Snow: Discovering the Alps in Summer

When people think of the Alps, images of pristine snow-capped peaks and world-class ski resorts often come to mind. But once the snow melts, a different kind of magic emerges—one filled with wildflower meadows, glacial lakes, and charming villages bathed in sunshine. Summer in the Alps is a well-kept secret among those who seek breathtaking landscapes, fresh mountain air, and a mix of adventure and relaxation. Whether you’re an avid hiker, a wellness seeker, or a foodie in search of alpine flavors, here’s where to go to experience the best of the Alps in summer.

1. Zermatt, Switzerland: Majestic Peaks and Outdoor Adventures

Zermatt, home to the iconic Matterhorn, is a dream destination in summer. The town transforms into a haven for hikers, bikers, and nature lovers. The Gornergrat Railway offers panoramic views of 29 peaks over 4,000 meters, while the Five Lakes Hike takes visitors through a stunning alpine landscape dotted with crystal-clear lakes.

For those looking for a unique experience, summer skiing is possible on the Theodul Glacier, where snow remains year-round. And after a long day outdoors, unwind at a luxurious mountain spa or dine at a gourmet restaurant like Chez Vrony, known for its stunning terrace views.

2. Lake Como & The Italian Alps: A Romantic Alpine Retreat

For those who prefer their mountains with a side of Mediterranean charm, the Italian Alps and Lake Como offer a blend of luxury and natural beauty. Stay in a lakeside villa, take a boat tour to explore picturesque towns like Bellagio and Varenna, and indulge in Michelin-starred Italian cuisine.

For an alpine escape, head to the Dolomites, where dramatic limestone peaks provide a striking backdrop for hiking and rock climbing. The Seceda ridgeline hike is one of the most Instagram-worthy treks in Europe, while the Alta Via 1 offers a multi-day adventure through breathtaking valleys and alpine refuges.

3. Chamonix, France: The Adventure Capital of the Alps

If adrenaline is what you seek, Chamonix is the place to be. Known as the mountaineering capital of the world, this French alpine town is the gateway to Mont Blanc, the highest peak in Western Europe. From paragliding over the mountains to tackling the famous Vallée Blanche glacier hike, adventure enthusiasts will find no shortage of thrills.

For a more relaxed experience, take the Aiguille du Midi cable car to enjoy views that stretch into Italy and Switzerland. And don’t leave without sampling Savoyard cuisine, including fondue and tartiflette, at one of Chamonix’s cozy mountain restaurants.

4. Lech, Austria: Alpine Elegance and Hidden Trails

Lech is a refined, less crowded alternative to some of the more famous Alpine destinations. Known for its exclusive ski resorts, this Austrian gem is just as spectacular in summer. The Green Ring Trail is a must for hikers, offering breathtaking views of lush meadows and dramatic peaks.

What sets Lech apart is its dedication to wellness and relaxation. Many of its luxury hotels offer world-class spas, such as Severin*s Alpine Retreat, where guests can indulge in rejuvenating treatments with a view of the mountains.

5. Gstaad, Switzerland: Luxury and Tranquility in the Alps

If you’re looking for a sophisticated summer escape, Gstaad is synonymous with luxury and tranquility. The town has long been a favorite retreat for celebrities and royals, offering five-star hotels, designer boutiques, and gourmet restaurants.

Beyond the glamour, Gstaad’s surrounding landscapes are perfect for gentle hikes, such as the Lake Lauenen trail, where you can picnic by a turquoise alpine lake. The Gstaad Palace Spa offers a wellness experience that blends traditional alpine treatments with modern luxury.

6. St. Moritz, Switzerland: Glamorous High-Altitude Summer

St. Moritz isn’t just for winter sports—it’s one of the most glamorous summer destinations in the Alps. Nestled in the Engadin Valley, this Swiss retreat boasts an incredible 322 days of sunshine per year, making it perfect for outdoor activities and lakeside relaxation.

The Muottas Muragl panorama trail is a must-do, offering breathtaking views over the Engadin lakes. For a unique alpine experience, take a ride on the Bernina Express, one of the world’s most scenic train journeys, which crosses into Italy with spectacular glacier views.

St. Moritz also excels in luxury and wellness. The Badrutt’s Palace Hotel and Kulm Hotel offer world-class spa treatments, while the town’s gourmet restaurants and designer boutiques make it a favorite among those seeking an upscale mountain retreat.

Why Summer in the Alps?

Unlike winter, when the Alps are bustling with skiers, summer brings a more relaxed atmosphere, allowing visitors to explore at their own pace. The weather is pleasantly warm, the crowds are smaller, and the activities are diverse—from wellness retreats to outdoor adventures. Whether you’re looking for a romantic escape, a family-friendly holiday, or a high-altitude adventure, the Alps in summer offer something for everyone.

So, swap the ski jacket for a hiking backpack and discover the magic of the Alps when the mountains turn green. It might just become your new favorite time to visit.

Are you planning a summer trip to the Alps? Which destination would you choose? Let us know in the comments!

Is Paragliding in Switzerland Safe?

Yes, paragliding in Switzerland is very safe when done with a certified instructor or licensed operator. The country has some of the strictest aviation and safety regulations in the world, ensuring that flights are conducted under optimal conditions.

Here’s why Switzerland is one of the safest places to paraglide:

  • Highly Trained Pilots – Licensed paragliding instructors undergo extensive training and follow Swiss aviation guidelines.

  • Stable Weather Conditions – Many paragliding sites, such as Interlaken and Zermatt, have predictable wind patterns, making takeoff and landing smoother.

  • Advanced Equipment – Operators use state-of-the-art, regularly inspected gear, including reserve parachutes and GPS tracking.

  • Pre-Flight Safety Checks – Before takeoff, pilots conduct weather assessments, wind direction tests, and equipment inspections to ensure a safe flight.

For those new to paragliding, a tandem flight with an expert pilot is the safest and most luxurious way to experience Switzerland from the sky.

10 Reasons to Ski in Europe

As East Coast skiers, you know the thrill of carving down the slopes. But have you ever wondered what it's like to experience the legendary ski resorts of the European Alps? From charming villages to breathtaking scenery, European skiing offers a unique blend of culture, luxury, and adventure that you simply won't find stateside. Here are ten compelling reasons why your next ski trip should be across the Atlantic:

  1. Embrace the Art of Après-Ski: A More Relaxed and Refined Culture
Forget the all-day shred sessions and embrace the European philosophy of "ski to live," not "live to ski." In the Alps, skiing is interwoven with a sophisticated appreciation for leisure. Picture yourself enjoying long, leisurely lunches at sun-drenched mountain huts, indulging in scenic spa afternoons with panoramic views, and savoring cozy après-ski gatherings without the pressure to conquer every peak. It's about immersing yourself in a culture that values both adventure and relaxation.

  2. Unrivaled Vertical Descent: Longer Runs for More Time on the Snow
Tired of short, choppy trails that leave you spending more time on the lift than on the snow? European ski resorts boast some of the most extensive and exhilarating ski runs in the world. Imagine gliding down 10+ mile descents in iconic destinations like Zermatt, Val d'Isère, and St. Anton, carving through pristine powder and soaking up the breathtaking scenery. It's an experience that redefines the meaning of "time well spent" on the slopes.

  3. Michelin-Starred Delights: Elevating Your Culinary Experience on the Mountain
Picture this: You're enjoying a perfectly prepared three-course meal at a ski-in/ski-out restaurant, savoring exquisite flavors while gazing out at snow-capped peaks. In the Alps, this isn't a fantasy—it's the norm. Many ski resorts boast Michelin-starred restaurants right on the slopes, offering a culinary experience that far surpasses the typical burgers and fries found at a U.S. resort lodge. It's a gastronomic adventure that will tantalize your taste buds and elevate your entire ski vacation.

  4. Seamless Connections: Effortless Access by World-Class Rail
Ditch the rental car and embrace the ease and elegance of European rail travel. From the iconic Glacier Express traversing the Swiss Alps to the swift and scenic trains connecting Geneva to the slopes, accessing your chosen resort is a stress-free and unforgettable experience. Imagine gliding through breathtaking landscapes while leaving the traffic jams far behind.

  5. Immerse Yourself in History: Authentic Alpine Villages with Centuries of Charm
Step back in time as you wander through the authentic Alpine villages that form the heart of European ski culture. Unlike manufactured resorts, these are living, breathing communities with centuries of history, charming cobblestone streets, family-run hotels, and a rich tapestry of traditions waiting to be discovered in places like Zermatt, Lech, and Chamonix.

  6. Après-Ski Elevated: A Celebration of Culture and Cuisine
The European après-ski scene is a far cry from the typical cafeteria fare found on US mountains. Picture yourself unwinding in a charming chalet, sipping vin chaud by a crackling fire, and indulging in a delectable cheese fondue with breathtaking Matterhorn views. It's a true celebration of Alpine culture and culinary delights.

  7. Reliable Powder and Extended Seasons: Guaranteed Snow for Unforgettable Skiing
Thanks to their higher altitudes, the Alps consistently boast exceptional snow conditions, ensuring a longer and more reliable ski season. While lower-elevation resorts may face unpredictable conditions, you can count on the Alps to deliver world-class powder and consistent snow cover throughout the winter months.

  8. Effortless Flow: Uncrowded Slopes and Minimal Lift Lines
Even the most renowned European resorts offer a surprisingly uncrowded experience compared to their American counterparts. With high-capacity lifts and expansive terrain, you can spend less time waiting in line and more time carving down the slopes, enjoying the freedom and exhilaration of the mountains.

  9. Exceptional Instruction: World-Class Ski Schools and Personalized Guidance
Elevate your skills with world-class instruction from experienced professionals. European ski schools often offer smaller class sizes, longer instruction hours, and even lunch for children, making them a truly exceptional value for families seeking to improve their technique and confidence on the slopes.

  10. Smart Value: Making the Most of Your Investment
While luxury is certainly within reach, European ski resorts also offer smart opportunities to maximize your investment. With a bit of planning and insider knowledge, you can experience the best of the Alps without exceeding your personal priorities, allowing you to indulge in exceptional experiences that will last a lifetime.

Ready to trade the ordinary for the extraordinary and experience the magic of European skiing for yourself? Contact Sebastian Luxe Travel today to begin planning your personalized Alpine adventure. Zermatt

Imagine your family surrounded by the majestic peaks of the Swiss Alps. That's Zermatt! On a recent trip, we discovered it's a truly magical place. From incredible skiing and breathtaking mountain views to cozy dinners and special family moments, our time in Zermatt was unforgettable.

Arriving in a Car-Free Paradise:

Our adventure started with a beautiful train ride from Zurich – a relaxing way to travel right into the heart of Switzerland. When we arrived in car-free Zermatt, we were greeted by charming chalets, snow-covered peaks, and the famous Matterhorn. The fresh mountain air and twinkling lights created a welcoming atmosphere for our winter vacation. We chose Hotel Christiania, a comfortable and luxurious hotel that felt perfect for families. Skiing Adventures for Everyone:

Zermatt is known as one of the best ski destinations in the world, and we couldn't wait to hit the slopes! Our son, Sebbie, had a fantastic time at Zermatters ski school. The instructors were friendly and helped him gain confidence. Meanwhile, we explored different ski areas, from the gentle slopes of Sunnegga to the exciting trails of Gornergrat and the amazing Theodul Glacier. There was something for every skier in our family! (Consider adding a great picture of ski school)

A Delicious Taste of the Alps:

You can't visit Zermatt without trying the delicious Swiss food, and we certainly did! We enjoyed a yummy fondue at Say Cheese, a cozy restaurant that's perfect for families. For a casual meal, Da Giuseppe’s was a hit, serving tasty Italian dishes that Sebbie loved. (Consider a photo of the fondue)

One of the best meals of our trip was at Potato, where we had an incredible tasting menu. Since we had a babysitter for Sebbie that night, we were able to relax and enjoy every dish. If you love food, we highly recommend it! (Consider a stunning picture of the food)

Relaxing Afternoons at the Spa:

After skiing all morning, we loved spending our afternoons at the spa. The sauna, steam room, and pool at Hotel Christiania were the perfect place to relax and warm up.
